Teacher's College "I Am A Dreamer Musician" Program Positively Influences Dreamers’ Academic Self-Concept and Self-Esteem, Study Says
Tuesday, September 21, 2010 at 06:14PM The newly created Teacher's College "I Am A Dreamer Musician" program, which offered 18 middle school students weekly music action workshops that enable them to discover, heighten, and enjoy their feelings of self-worth by learning how to create and perform using music improvisation, was extremely successful, according to a recent independent evaluation. Conceived and led by Dr. Bert Konowitz, Professor of Music at Teacher's College, the program consisted of of seven weeks of workshops and one final presentation.
The evaluation was designed to gather information that would examine the impact of participation in the project on students’ academic performance and self esteem. The assessment team sought detailed information regarding students’ self-esteem through individual interviews and parent survey. In addition, individual interviews were conducted at the end of the evaluation. The study found that the program did indeed have a significant effect on Dreamers' self esteem, academic self-concept, and feelings about music.
