IHDF-NY Supports Mayoral Control in NYC
The "I Have a Dream" Foundation, "I Have A Dream" Foundation - New York, and 60 other community, faith-based, and educational organizations are part of a coalition to support Mayoral Control in NYC. IHDF-NY joined the coalition for the following reasons:
Mayoral control means that finally someone is accountable for our schools and has the authority to enact meaningful reforms.
Under mayoral control, we’ve seen real progress in the NYC public schools: Schools are safer, teachers are more qualified and funding has been equalized, so every child has a chance to succeed. As a result, test scores and graduation rates are rising.
With the mayoral control law set to expire this June, all this progress is now in jeopardy. Each of us must take action in order to ensure that the law is renewed.

In August, Thierry Cazeau, Executive Director of I Have a Dream" Foundation® - New York Metro Area, joined a group of Learn NY community activists to thank Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan for her critical role in renewing mayoral control of public schools. Thanks to the renewal of mayoral control, New York City’s public school kids will continue to get the accountability and progress they deserve.
As a Learn NY coalition partner, IHDF-NY was one of over 80 faith-based, education, and community organizations that facilitated 32,000 parent-to-legislator contacts (pledge cards, emails, phone calls, and letters), educated nearly 10,000 parents about mayoral control, and helped over 550 parents, educators and community leaders visit their legislators. At the meeting, Thierry shared how mayoral control had improved the schools IHDF-NY Metro partners with and updated Assemblyowoman Nolan on their achievements in the Ravenswood community.
